Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken Recipe

I’m having fun with my new kitchen staple, so I’m making a falling apart tender rotisserie chicken in the air fryer!

Cooking with Air Fryer is really thrilling and if you have a good machine, it makes cooking much more fun! We will use our new Instant Pot Vortex Plus to prepare our rotisserie chickens!

Let’s start preparing the chicken

Empty the body cavity (remove any gizzards, if inside), place your chicken on a clean cutting board and pat dry with kitchen paper. If desired, cut off the tail, as well as any excess skin or fat deposits.

Mix your spices, including paprika (smoked paprika is best), garlic powder, onion powder, lemon zest, salt and pepper, in a small bowl and set aside. Cut the lemon into quarters you used for skin and place it in the body cavity of the chicken.

Then drizzle olive oil over your fryer chicken and rub it into the skin on all sides of the chicken. Sprinkle herbs on your chicken and rub it into the skin as well.

Bundle your chicken with kitchen rope so that the wings and legs are tied. Otherwise they will flop loosely with every rotation of the chicken.

Once your entire fryer is assembled, push the rotisserie (or rod) through the chicken and use the forks included with your Vortex Plus to attach each end of the chicken to the rotisserie rod. Line your drip pan with aluminum foil for easy cleanup, then set your air fryer to preheat to 380ºF (193ºC).

There will be options to ‘fry’ or ‘roast’ the chicken. While both will work with a similar cooking time, I like the crispy skin that results from the air frying option.

Cooking your entire Rotisserie Chicken

Set the air fryer cooking time to 40 minutes and wait for the ‘add food’ indicator. After your air fryer has preheated, load the rotisserie spit into it by pulling the red handle on the left and first locking it on the left side of the rotisserie. Slide the rod along the metal rod on the right until the rod engages the latch and is firmly in place.

Close the door of your hot air fryer and cook for 45 minutes. Check the internal temperature of your chicken after 30 minutes and continue cooking Intervals of 5 minutes until your chicken has an internal temperature of 165 oF (74 oC) at the thickest points. This is the USDA food safety recommended internal temperature, which should be read with a digital meat thermometer.

To remove your hot air fryer rotisserie chicken, press down on the red lever on the left and lift the spit out with the y-bar that came with your Instant Pot vortex plus. Place the cooked chicken on a cutting board, plate or dish and cover loosely with aluminum foil to rest for 5 – 10 minutes before serving.

*Putting your chicken in a bundle helps to keep the whole chicken moist and moist, with no truss, the legs and wings are dried out. Resting your chicken also provides tender, flavorful chicken meat as it allows the juices to return to the center of the meat portions

Can I use chicken in any size? What size of chicken can I use in my Vortex Plus?

Nope! You cannot use any size chicken. Most whole chickens in the supermarket are over 4 lbs, so you’ll have to look for a smaller frying chicken.

Your chicken should be no more than 4 pounds to cook in the Instant Pot Vortex Plus. Anything larger rubs the inside of the convection oven and may burn parts of your rotisserie chicken.

Leftover Rotisserie Chicken

You can use your leftover rotisserie chicken in so many recipes! Sub the leftover turkey for chicken in my turkey a la king, turkey curry, or turkey tetrazzini.

Make some noodle soup with chicken, creamy chicken and wild rice soup from Minnesota, or my tasty caldo de pollo mexicano (Mexican chicken soup).

Ingredients :

4 lb whole air fryer chicken (3-4 pounds chicken is best – I recommend no more than 4 pounds in the Vortex Plus)
2 tablespoon olive oil (extra virgin)
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 lemon (zested and quartered)
Salt and pepper (to taste)

Instructions – Fast Forward

  1. Prepare your chicken by making sure the inner cavity is clean and the giblets removed. Place the chicken on a clean cutting board.
  2. Combine herbal ingredients (peppers, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, lemon zest) in a small bowl and set aside.
  3. If desired, cut the tail of your chicken and any excess fat. Put the lemon quarters in the body cavity, cover the chicken with olive oil and rub the herbs in the skin.
  4. Use kitchen rope to bundle the chicken so that the legs and wings do not fold while rotating on the rotisserie function.
  5. Push the rotisserie spit through the chicken and secure with the rotisserie forks at both ends. Line your drip tray with aluminum foil (for easier cleanup).
  6. Set the air fryer to 380 degrees F. (193 degrees C) and select ‘hot air’ or ‘roast’. * I recommend the hot air option for crispy skin. Set the time to 45 minutes.
  7. When your air fryer is preheated and indicates ‘adding food’, first place the left side of your rotisserie in the vortex plus by pressing the red handle. Then slide the right side along the metal bar until it snaps into the latch and is firmly in place.
  8. Close the door and cook for 40 minutes. Check the internal temperature of your chicken with a meat thermometer. If necessary, cook for another 5 minutes at a time until the safe internal temperature of 165 degrees F. (74 degrees C) is reached.
  9. Use the Vortex Plus y-bar to remove the chicken and push the red lever to release the rotisserie. Place the cooked chicken on a cutting board or plate and cover it loosely with aluminum foil for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Note :

*A whole frying chicken larger than 4 lbs is probably too big for the oven space in your Instant Pot Vortex Plus. It can burn if it hits the top of the inner oven.

** Putting your chicken in a bundle helps to keep the whole chicken juicy and moist, without truss, the legs and wings are dried out.
