How to cook Air Fryer rotisserie chicken

This Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken recipe makes roasting your whole chicken so much easier! In less than an hour, you’ll have a perfectly tender, juicy chicken with crispy skin that rivals any supermarket or deli chicken!

I’m having fun with my new kitchen staple, so I’m making a falling-apart tender rotisserie chicken in the air fryer!

Cooking with Air Fryer is really thrilling and if you have a good machine, it makes cooking much more fun! We will use our new Instant Pot Vortex Plus to prepare our rotisserie chickens!

Prepare the chicken for Air Fryer rotisserie

Empty the body cavity (remove any gizzards, if inside), place your chicken on a clean cutting board and pat dry with kitchen paper. If desired, cut off the tail, as well as any excess skin or fat deposits.

Mix your spices, including paprika (smoked paprika is best), garlic powder, onion powder, lemon zest, salt and pepper, in a small bowl and set aside. Cut the lemon into quarters you used for skin and place it in the body cavity of the chicken.

Then drizzle olive oil over your fryer chicken and rub it into the skin on all sides of the chicken. Sprinkle herbs on your chicken and rub it into the skin as well.

Bundle your chicken with kitchen rope so that the wings and legs are tied. Otherwise, they will flop loosely with every rotation of the chicken.

Once your entire fryer is assembled, push the rotisserie (or rod) through the chicken and use the forks included with your Vortex Plus to attach each end of the chicken to the rotisserie rod. Line your drip pan with aluminum foil for easy cleanup, then set your air fryer to preheat to 380ºF (193ºC).

There will be options to ‘fry’ or ‘roast’ the chicken. While both will work with a similar cooking time, I like the crispy skin that results from the air frying option.

Set the air fryer cooking time to 40 minutes and wait for the ‘add food’ indicator. After your air fryer has preheated, load the rotisserie spit into it by pulling the red handle on the left and first locking it on the left side of the rotisserie. Slide the rod along the metal rod on the right until the rod engages the latch and is firmly in place.

Close the door of your hot air fryer and cook for 45 minutes. Check the internal temperature of your chicken after 30 minutes and continue cooking Intervals of 5 minutes until your chicken has an internal temperature of 165 oF (74 oC) at the thickest points. This is the USDA food safety recommended internal temperature, which should be read with a digital meat thermometer.

To remove your hot air fryer rotisserie chicken, press down on the red lever on the left and lift the spit out with the y-bar that came with your Instant Pot vortex plus. Place the cooked chicken on a cutting board, plate or dish and cover loosely with aluminum foil to rest for 5 – 10 minutes before serving.

Can I use Air Fryer rotisserie chicken in any size?

Your chicken should be no more than 4 pounds to cook in the Instant Pot Vortex Plus. Anything larger rubs the inside of the convection oven and may burn parts of your rotisserie chicken.

You can use your leftover rotisserie chicken in so many recipes! Sub the leftover turkey for chicken in my turkey a la king, turkey curry, or turkey tetrazzini.

Make some noodle soup with chicken, creamy chicken, and wild rice soup from Minnesota, or my tasty Caldo de Pollo Mexicano (Mexican chicken soup).
